Funny thing about the ban:

A Chinese app very similar to TikTok, called "RedNote," is the #1 app in every provider's app store and has seen over 20,000,000 new American users in the last week LOL.

the lack of digital/cyber literacy in the US is astounding....absolutely ridiculous people would do something like that without realizing the risks

It is highly suspect that a business would opt to vaporize all its value by refusing to sell when there is the only option, unless they were being directed by a state to do so.

So if anything their refusal to play ball makes me believe that ticktok was ran in close association with nefarious actors.

Still, it is swatting at flies though looks like Americans by and large are prepping by shifting to a different Chinese owned alternative.

I'm not surprised at all. We're a country of morons. Mind you I say that knowing that when I talk to my daughter and even Mrs. Sisko in some cases about guarding their privacy on their devices, I'm met with  *sigh*

TikTok will shut down in the United States as a means for the people on TikTok to put pressure on their Legislators to come up with a fix. They may sell eventually, but they won't do it on their deadline.

A tremendous part of their value isn't just their user base, but the algorithm itself. The clones of TikTok suck in comparison. And it's pretty obvious that companies like Meta and X want to get their hands on that IP. And that means putting pressure of the government to ban it so they can "rescue" it possibly on the cheap.

Why isn't the government shutting down Temu or Shein if they're so concerned about security risks for Americans?

You usually don’t upload images of your face to Temu but you are probably right about this being a squeeze to get the ip; but couldn’t they sell the user base to a use company then license the algorithm?

I imagine the game of chicken may end up with some sort of sale/license. But just like when a network is feuding with a cable company, it often doesn’t get settled until after the screen goes blank.

I’m sure there are security risks involved. And I’m sure there is US government concern that China will force its way into TikTok and do things to interfere with people in the US.

We’re already experiencing this with American social media from X and Meta. It’s just that these are American companies that probably give our government access. And given that X is now run by a government official. I’m concerned that it’s going to get scary fast.
