Law enforcement and health officials are warning the public about a dangerous new drug known as “Moon Rocks” - a highly concentrated form of cannabis recently discovered during a Birmingham police drug bust.
Moon Rocks are made by combining marijuana flower with hash oil and rolling it in cannabis powder, resulting in THC levels that can reach 50% or higher — significantly more potent than traditional cannabis.
While the drug has not officially appeared in Shelby County, Compact officers say they’re already seeing an increase in THC-infused products throughout the region.
“This is not the marijuana from the 1960s or ’70s,” said Lt. Shane Plyler, executive director of Compact. “You’re talking about the equivalent of smoking 50 joints in one go. The effects can be intense — and dangerous.”
