Man! People are losing it over the new Nintendo Switch game pricings. A basic rundown:
1. Nintendo is charging $70 for games that came out last generation and then charging an extra $10 to update it to the current gen.
2. The new Mario Kart game is going to cost $80 for a digital copy and $90 for the physical copy.
3. This is my favorite part! The physical copy, isn't even an actual copy. What you're buying is a "game key card" where you basically still have to download the game. So you're paying extra for...?
Add on to the fact that Nintendo NEVER drops it's game prices and I'll tell you why I haven't bought anything Nintendo in almost 20 years. Let me tell you, the GameCube was my love and the DS was probably my favorite system EVER. Nintendo has fallen off hard.

Yeah, I don't mind the $70-80 price tag in the sense that premier games have been $60 for a long time and have managed to duck inflation for a while. There was no way that gravy train was going to last forever, and we're seeing that on PC nowadays somewhat too.Simmsy wrote: Thu Apr 03, 2025 5:02 pmMan! Completely agree about the rest of it though. The kids are happy with the Switch, we have no need to even consider buying the Switch 2. Nintendo's refusal to drop prices or run sales has always rubbed me the wrong way.

The only times Nintendo games ever dropped in price for the longest time was after they hit 1 millions sales and the sales finally stagnated. They would lower it to like $20, thats how I finally got Mario 64. The kids in my house had a switch, it fell out of rotation because all of the Nintendo games (a lot of the desirable Switch library) were always full priced. You can't wait for a price drop like you can on PC or other consoles, it also makes it impossible to sell or buy on the used market. I'd rather not play than get extorted.
I disagree on the game prices, I can see (not like, but see) going to $70 on some games, but just putting an $80 - $90 price tag because you can? Mario Kart can be played on a tablet, the game mechanics are non existent. You can literally hold down the accelerate button and only the accelerate button and still win. Your game has to be worth the price.
Thats another thing: I don't care how much you spent on the budget, that isn't my problem. The budget of the game shouldn't effect the price tag. If I go to a movie, a ticket is the same price if it's a Marvel movie or a low budget indie. If you want to spend 600 million on a game and 300 million on marketing...maybe you shouldn't? Nintendo won't even spend over 150 million on a game's budget, its a grift. Add on the tariffs, we'll see how well Nintendo fares. They're supposed to be the cheaper option of the gaming market, they'll get sales of course...but I don't think they'll get the original Switch numbers. The way Nintendo is scrambling to spin this into good PR is telling.

Buy 2 Get 1 hardly qualifies as a video game sale. If I'm looking for one game, I'm not interested in buying three just to get a discount. The Evil Genius wrote: Sat Apr 05, 2025 6:59 pmI'll disagree that Nintendo games don't go on sale. Even first party ones do. Best sales are usually the B2G1 at Target.
Also Dekudeals is your friend.
Now..about that Switch 2 price. Can't wait for it to go up $100 because of the tariffs.
Yes, Nintendo does occasionally put games on sale, but that's pretty rare for first-party games and not really the core of my gripe.
We lost the cartridge for Mario Kart 8. We have two kids, we moved, it happens. The kids wanted to play it, I figured I'd replace it, shouldn't be too expensive at this point to download it.
It's still $60. The game is Ten. Years. Old.
The lesson's already been learned about buying cartridges, but again, that's somewhat beside the point. Look at blockbuster games of that era on any other platform - Fallout 4, Wolfenstein: New Order, Far Cry 4, etc. None of them are still sitting at $60. And even if you want to say MarioKart will probably be on sale for 39.99 if you're patient, those games will go down to the $5-10 range in a Steam or GOG sale.

Return policy is your friend though.
Return 2 or 1 of the games...still get the 33% off the games you keep (assuming they are equal price).
Fwiw you can get Mario Kart 8 Deluxe version right now from Woot for $42. And it has been as low as $29.99 both physically and digitally before.
