Texas measles outbreak: 90 cases reported in South Plains region

An outbreak of measles has struck the South Plains region of Texas, with 90 cases reported since late January, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

The outbreak has affected seven counties in total, with Gaines County reporting the highest number of cases at 57. Terry County follows with 20 cases, while other affected counties include Yoakum (4) Dawson (6), Ector (1), Lubbock (1) and Lynn (1).

Of the 90 cases, 16 patients have been hospitalized. Only five of the infected individuals were vaccinated, with the rest either unvaccinated or having unknown vaccination status, according to DSHS.

The majority of cases are among children and teenagers, with 51 cases in the 5-17 age group and 26 cases in children under 5. Ten cases have been reported in adults over 18, with three cases pending age classification by DSHS.

Health officials warn that due to the highly contagious nature of measles, additional cases are likely to occur in the outbreak area and surrounding communities.

Measles, a highly infectious respiratory disease, poses a severe health risk to individuals lacking immunity against the virus. The illness spreads through direct contact with infectious droplets or via airborne transmission when an infected person exhales, coughs or sneezes. The virus can linger in the air, remaining contagious for up to two hours after an infected individual has left an area.

The DSHS is collaborating with local health departments to investigate the outbreak and is urging residents to get vaccinated. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, administered in two doses, is considered highly effective in preventing measles.

DSHS urges residents of the affected counties to seek vaccination and encourages them to contact their health care provider.

This comes 25 years after Measles was declared eliminated from the United States in 2000. Way to go Anti-Vaxxers! Quite an achievement.

Unvaccinated Child Dies of Measles in Texas, Officials Say

A child has died of measles in West Texas, the first known death from an outbreak of the disease that is spreading in the state and in neighboring New Mexico, officials said on Wednesday.

Health officials in Lubbock and the Texas Department of State Health Services said in a statement that the patient was an unvaccinated school-age child who had died in the previous 24 hours.

The officials did not release further information, but said that a news conference was planned for Wednesday afternoon at the Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

At least 124 cases of measles have been identified in Texas since late January, mostly among children and teenagers who are either unvaccinated or whose vaccination status was unknown, Texas health officials say. Eighteen have been hospitalized.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can be life-threatening to anyone who is not protected against the virus.

Too bad it didn't kill the parents who were too stupid to get their kid vaccinated, but killed an innocent child who could have been spared.

Wondering how this might escalate … a large national youth sports tournament I’m aware of has lots of anxious parents already anxious what precautions are being taken by people visiting from Texas.

What are the odds that this will progress at the state if not national level and whether travelers from states with low vaccination numbers will be asked for evidence of vaccination. Officially anyone applying for immigrant visas in the USA is required to be vaccinated against measles, polio etc.

Well the antivaxxers are already blaming the measles vaccine for the outbreak in Texas. Right now, we really do live in the stupidest timeline where people actually believe vaccines cause the sickness they are supposed to offer protection from.

Until we hit the full finding out stage of FAFO, say a few thousand or more kids dead, people will continue on being part the dumbest generation cult. And tbh, since we saw a million plus Americans die of covid and no one fucking cared, I'm not even sure 1-2k or more kids dieing from something as easily prevented as measles would move the needle much.

Kentucky, come on down! You're the next contestant on the Measles Outbreak.

Kentucky health officials identify measles case in Commonwealth

Kentucky health officials have confirmed a measles case in the state on Wednesday.

Health officials with the Kentucky Department of Public Health (KDPH) and the Franklin County Health Department said an adult "had recently traveled internationally to an area with ongoing measles transmission."

They said the Kentuckian went to a gym while infectious, and they are working to contact anyone who may have been exposed.

Anyone who went to the Planet Fitness on Allen Way in Frankfort on Monday, Feb. 17 from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. may have been exposed health officials said. Anyone exposed and unvaccinated should quarantine for 21 days and contact their healthcare provider if any symptoms appear.

Whooping cough cases climb in Lancaster County

The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department on Thursday announced that cases of whooping cough continue to increase in southeast Nebraska.

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious illness marked by severe coughing.

“Whooping cough is another disease that we monitor very closely, and we’ve seen a further uptick in cases in January and so far in February,” Health Director Kerry Kernen said. “We recommend people contact their health care provider if they have symptoms and stay current on whooping cough vaccine.”
