Commanders grant two-time Pro Bowl DT Jonathan Allen permission to seek a trade

By Jonathan Jones

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Washington Commanders have granted two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jonathan Allen permission to seek a trade, sources tell CBS Sports.

Allen, the team's first-round pick in 2017, is in the final year of his contract with Washington. His $15.5 million base salary for the 2025 season is not guaranteed.

Allen has spent his entire eight-year career with the Commanders. In 2021, he signed a four-year contract extension worth $72 million. He followed that up with two consecutive Pro Bowl seasons for Washington.

Last year, Allen tore his pectoral and missed half the season. In eight games he had three sacks, and he played in all three of Washington's postseason contests.

The Commanders have been preparing for the possibility of life without Allen. In 2023, the Commanders extended Daron Payne on a $90 million contract. Last year, they selected Johnny Newton in the second round of the draft.

Allen has the third-highest cap number on the Commanders team in 2025 at $22.47 million. A trade or outright release would free up nearly $17 million in cap space.

Multiple teams have fielded calls related to Allen in recent days, and conversations are expected to continue this week in Indianapollis at the NFL Scouting Combine.

If he goes and goes outside the division, and with Zach Martin announcing retirement , that's two big defensive players out of our division. I bet Eagle fans like that idea.

Can we get anything for him? Say a 3rd or 4th Rounder?

Seems unlikely and he gets cut. With his salary off the books, should be able to get a good player.

would love to see him restructure- but a draft choice would be nice.

could have a great path rush up the middle- with Newton and Osa Odighizuwa

It would be great if we can make a trade with someone. While a I appreciate his time with the Commanders, he was solid but not a game changer.

I do feel a little bad for Allen. He was a rock for us during some dark years, and as a franchise we're finally hitting an upswing just as his career is entering the decline stage and he can't come along for the ride. But we have real football people running the operation now and the smart football move is to salvage something for Allen at this stage of his career. The truth is he's 30, coming off an injury, and makes a lot of money playing a non-premium position. I'd be happy with a 4th but we'll probably get no more than a 5th.

It's better to get away from him a year early then a year to late.

It's been 3 seasons since Jon Allen was a big defensive player. He has pretty much sucked the past 2 seasons and is way overpaid. I'm glad to see Peters has recognized this and the team will finally be moving on.

Yeah, have to agree with that and I'm fine with the move. That whole Fantastic Four story didn't really pan out for us and I'll put more on coaching and the culture under Snyder than on overestimating the physical talent. Chase Young sure didn't turn out big for us either. 😡

Here's to those kind of missteps being much less frequent moving forward. This draft will really give us more of an idea about sustained efficacy of this new outfit.
