NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris and D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) gathered Monday for an official announcement that the NFL draft will be held in D.C. in the spring of 2027, an event they said could bring more than a million people to the National Mall and continue the resurgence of the city’s pro football franchise.
What might have been a straightforward proclamation involving the NFL’s top executive, a billionaire team owner and a triumphant politician, though, was hosted by President Donald Trump in the Oval Office, leaving Goodell, Harris and Bowser to wait through questions on movie tariffs, Trump’s desire to reopen a federal penitentiary on Alcatraz and the reaction to an image posted on his Truth Social account of him dressed as the Pope.
Before and after those questions, Trump and the others celebrated news that reflected Bowser’s view of her city as “a sports capital” and Trump’s vision of the District as a staging ground for grand events, from a military parade commemorating the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday to the biggest offseason event on the NFL’s calendar.
“It’s going to be beautiful,” Trump said. “It’s going to be something that nobody else will ever be able to duplicate, I don’t suspect.”
