D.C. and the Washington Commanders are preparing to unveil a deal they reached to bring the football team back to RFK Stadium, with the city releasing a hype video Monday morning celebrating the partnership. Details on financing and other key issues are expected later Monday. But one standout feature is a planned roof over the stadium, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

The roof would enable the NFL and its owners to give consideration to Washington for hosting a future Super Bowl, according to the two, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the details before an 11 a.m. news conference. Hosting a Super Bowl would be a significant revenue-generating opportunity for the team and District, and has long been important to the team’s ownership.

The NFL does not typically award Super Bowls to cold-weather cities unless the stadium has a roof. Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey was among the rare exceptions in recent years.

D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) and Commanders principal owner Josh Harris are expected to be at the news conference announcing details of the deal on Monday morning. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also is expected to attend, according to a person familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the schedule is not yet public. Goodell was heavily involved in the deliberations.
