Georgia Supreme Court overturns some election rules, curbing State Election Board’s power

Georgia’s highest court on Tuesday overturned four rules passed by the State Election Board just before last year’s general election, ruling the board overstepped its authority and intruded on lawmaking power reserved for legislators under the state constitution.

The state Supreme Court’s unanimous decision limits the future rulemaking ability of the State Election Board and other executive branch agencies of Georgia’s government.

The board passed a slate of new rules in August and September that mostly had to do with processes after ballots are cast, spawning a flurry of lawsuits.

President Donald Trump narrowly lost the state in 2020 and alleged without evidence that election fraud had cost him victory. Three Trump-endorsed Republicans hold the majority on the five-person State Election Board.

The new rules brought an outcry that the board’s majority was trying to improperly use its power to help Trump. The board members claimed the changes were needed to improve the accuracy of results.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Thomas Cox ruled in October that seven of the rules were “illegal, unconstitutional and void,” but the board appealed.

In its decision, the state Supreme Court invalidated the requirements that ballots be hand-counted after the close of polls, that someone delivering an absentee ballot in person provide a signature and photo ID, that county election board members be allowed to conduct a “reasonable inquiry” before certifying results and that county election board members be granted broad access to election-related documents.

‘Mensa’ MAGA actor, so bad at lying for Trump, gets caught again: ‘One dumbass post after another’

James Woods, an actor and staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, was caught posting another lie tied to the immigration protests sweeping across Los Angeles.

On his X account, Woods — who has starred in “Once Upon a Time in America,” “Casino,” “Hercules” and other movies — posted an image of cubes of bricks on Sunday, with the caption, “It’s not like these ‘protests’ are organized though…”

The post, which has racked up over 4 million views, was later hit with a community note — a tool used by social media users to add context or correct a post on X.

“That cube of bricks is on a street in New Jersey, about 3,000 miles from Los Angeles,” the note reads.

“In addition to digital geolocation, a fact checker ground-truthed it, going ON SITE to the street and found the job where they are being used,” it continues.

Many social media users mocked Woods on Wednesday for spreading misinformation about who is behind organizing the protests — while others were up in arms before the note was added.

“Wood loves to talk about his IQ, but all I see is one dumbass post after another,” one user wrote, referring to his claim of being in Mensa International, a society for individuals with high IQs.

Another added, “James Woods. Bad actor. Worse liar.”

Mamdani Stuns Cuomo in N.Y.C. Mayoral Primary, as Ex-Governor Concedes

Zohran Mamdani, a little-known state lawmaker whose progressive economic platform electrified younger voters, surged into the lead in the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City, putting him on the verge of a stunning upset.

Former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, who had led the race for months, conceded the primary and congratulated Mr. Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist, in remarks after 10 p.m. He notably did not promise to continue his campaign in November, despite securing a third-party ballot line.

“Tonight was not our night,” a deflated-looking Mr. Cuomo, 67, told supporters. He added, of Mr. Mamdani: “Tonight is his night. He deserved it. He won.”

Unless one candidate receives more than 50 percent of first-choice votes in the initial count under the city’s ranked-choice voting system, counting will continue next week.

MAGA Issues 9/11 Warning Over Zohran Mamdani's Victory

Members of the MAGA movement have warned that the United States could face another attack like 9/11 after Zohran Mamdani won New York City's Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday.

Posting on social media, MAGA figures denounced Mamdani's victory and claimed he was supported by "terrorists."

There is no evidence to support these claims, which critics have called Islamophobic.

Mamdani faced anti-Muslim messages and death threats during his campaign and his campaign recently hired security to deal with the increasing threats made against him.

Some of the threats Mamdani faced in recent weeks are under investigation by the Hate Crime Task Force division of the New York City Police Department.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic socialist, declared victory on Tuesday night after former governor Andrew Cuomo conceded the race. Mamdani took a commanding position just hours after the polls closed, though the race's ultimate outcome will still be decided by a ranked choice count.

Responding to the results, Laura Loomer, a far-right activist, wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "Zohran Mamdani hasn't even been a U.S. citizen for 10 years. He is literally supported by terrorists. NYC is about to see 9/11 2.0."

Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk also wrote on X: "24 years ago a group of Muslims killed 2,753 people on 9/11. Now a Muslim Socialist is on pace to run New York City."

Mark Shanahan, who teaches American politics at the University of Surrey in the U.K., said the statements from MAGA showed that "U.S. politics has never been uglier."

Newer research dive on what's already been a topic since Trump's win: the increased support he got from Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians.

This piece references studies thar further delineates and quantifies demographic breakdowns and the differences from the votes given to Biden in 2020 vs trump in 2024.

Fascinating how a guy so widely associated with racist attitudes and thinking and on record actually saying and doing numerous things his entire life to deserve that association, still gained ground with several racial minorities in this country.

Of course, as for don himself (separate from the matter of "why' those minorities who chose to vote for him over Harris) it's good to remember he's the kind of racist/sexist that always makes those "special exceptions" in treatment for the "good [insert various slurs]" who provide him with useful services and cater to or compliment him sufficiently.
It ain't what you don't know that's a problem. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so.~~~Mark Twain

I’m at a loss to know what the @$&# these people were thinking. There’s always a few whackjobs on that train, but for it to be this many is what surprised me. OTOH, I guess the ‘Muricun dumbening is even immune to existential threats. SMDH

Virginia unemployment rate sees longest rise since '08 crisis

Virginia's unemployment rate is on a steady five-month increase — the longest streak since the 2008 Great Recession.

Why it matters: The Trump administration's federal job slashing and freezing of grants, contracts and medical research may be to blame.

State of play: Virginia's unemployment rate climbed to 3.4% in May, per new U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

While still below the national average (4.2%), the uptick marks the state's highest unemployment level since August 2021.
By the numbers: The state's total labor force decreased by more than 11,500 compared with last May, according to new Virginia Works household survey data.

Employed residents: ⬇️ 15,460
Federal jobs: ⬇️ 4,900
Unemployed residents: ⬆️ 3,929
Yes, but: Virginia's economy added nearly 50,000 nonfarm jobs over the past year, according to the state employment data, including 41,700 private sector jobs.

Also on the rise: Local government jobs (9,900) and state jobs (2,700).
Worth noting: While full June data won't be out until late July, unemployment claims have been up year-over-year every week thus far, per Virginia Works' weekly initial claims reports.
