2024-2025 - The Official Washington Capitals Thread
I couldn't see the 3rd period since dinner with family and friends date. But it was nice to see that Ovi got at least one goal in this game.
SAN JOSE -- Alex Ovechkin scored his 887th goal to move eight away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's NHL record of 894, and the Washington Capitals defeated the San Jose Sharks 5-1 at SAP Center on Saturday.
"I think we had a pretty good start, all four lines rolling. Holding the puck, making smart decisions," Ovechkin said.
Ovechkin deflected Martin Fehervary's shot from above the left face-off circle past the glove of San Jose goalie Georgi Romanov at 10:54 of the third period for the 5-1 lead.
"It’s great. Lots of people are now watching and lots of attention. It's a great feeling," Ovechkin said.
Ovechkin also had an assist, and Tom Wilson had two assists for the Capitals (44-15-8), who have won six of their past seven. Logan Thompson made 19 saves.
"Second period, I thought we got pushed a little bit. Started to get a little careless in the second," Washington coach Spencer Carbery said. "The first period, we knew in this building, we needed to have a fast start, and that's exactly what we did."
