New system issues 48,000 speeding tickets to Maryland drivers in the last 2 months
More than 48,000 citations were issued by the Maryland Safe Zones Automated Speed Enforcement system in the first two months of expanded speed monitoring, according to Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) officials.
23 of these citations were at the $1,000 level, which means the vehicle was traveling more than 40 miles per hour above the posted speed in a work zone where workers were present.
New rules recommended by the Work Zone Safety Work Group were implemented last year, including allowing speed cameras to be placed in more work zones and increasing the number of cameras in larger work zones. January 1 marked the beginning of a new tiered fine system.

Aborted landings due to Army helicopter near Reagan airport ‘unacceptable'
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Friday it is “unacceptable” two commercial aircraft had to abort landings at Reagan National Airport Thursday because of an Army Black Hawk helicopter flying to the Pentagon.
In addition to the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration investigating what happened, Duffy said, he plans to talk to the Department of Defense to determine why rules were “disregarded.”
The incident at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport involved a Delta Air Lines Airbus A319 and a Republic Airways Embraer E170, according to the NTSB. They were instructed by air traffic control to “perform go-arounds” because of the helicopter.
“Safety must ALWAYS come first,” Duffy said on the social platform X. “We just lost 67 souls! No more helicopter rides for VIPs or unnecessary training in a congested DCA airspace full of civilians. Take a taxi or Uber — besides most VIPs have black car service.”

Remember this guy?
Apparently, he was finally caught:
Cucumber sex act suspect sentenced, accused in string of lewd acts with handrails in DC
A man was sentenced on several charges Wednesday in connection with a string of public sex acts caught on camera last fall, marking an end to a bizarre story that prompted safety concerns near a Northwest high school.
Anthony Roget Hines II was sentenced in DC Superior Court after pleading guilty to five counts of lewd, indecent, or obscene acts and four counts of unlawful entry of private property.
Questions swirled online after one homeowner shared her concerns with DC News Now in September after her SUV was targeted by a man in her alleyway, where he was seen using a cucumber he lodged in the vehicle’s grille in a sex act.
Still photos from surveillance videos were included in the arrest warrant affidavit filed in October, showing a man police believed to be the same person engaging in sex acts at or near private homes and utilizing handrails.
One handrail in question in an alleyway on Q Street Northwest was reportedly targeted twice and is now wrapped in sandpaper.

Virginia Gov. Youngkin vetoes measure to let African American history courses count toward graduation
Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin has vetoed a bill that would have allowed African American history courses to count toward high school graduation requirements.
The measure, which was introduced in the House by Loudoun County Del. David Reid, would have allowed students and parents to choose African American History or AP African American Studies as substitutes for either World History I or World Geography that satisfy the history and social studies credit that students must complete.
Reid said he introduced the legislation after discussions with Loudoun County Public Schools and the NAACP. It would have applied to school districts where those classes are already being taught, and was not “forcing any school district to take this on as a new requirement, because we were really very sensitive about not levying an unfunded mandate,” he told WTOP.

Virginia House Candidate Comes Out As A Swinger Ahead Of November Election
Hmmm, we'll see how that goes.Yvonne Rorrer figured someone would out her on the campaign trail, so she got ahead of the story and did it herself.
Rorrer, a Democratic candidate for Virginia’s House of Delegates in the 47th district, revealed Saturday on social media that she is married and ethically nonmonogamous, meaning she and her husband consensually date other couples together.
“In politics, people love to dig up the unexpected and spin it into a spectacle,” the 47-year-old wrote on social media. “I don’t do shame, and I sure won’t give anyone else the opportunity to tell my story.”
Rorrer told HuffPost on Tuesday that while no one was threatening to out her, she believes word of her lifestyle would have gotten out of her inner circle in Stuart, Virginia, her hometown with a population of just over 1,000.
Don't think it will make much of a difference one-way-or-the-other... for a democratic woman running for office in a small town named for Confederate General Jeb Stuart in the ruby-red SW Appalachian corner of VA.Simmsy wrote: Wed May 14, 2025 6:24 amVirginia House Candidate Comes Out As A Swinger Ahead Of November Election

Trump pardons former sheriff convicted of bribery
Also, this happened in the same district as Abigail Spanberger, I wonder if this will give the dems a boost. People around here were thrilled when Jenkins lost re election and they were really happy with him going to jail. I wonder how they feel about him being pardoned.
This pisses me off because this is the county I live in and voted this asshole out of. Dude didn't have to spend a single day in jail. Now, I've got a friend who is a Trump supporter (flag on his house) who had a personal beef with our former sheriff and wanted him gone. I can't wait to see how he feels about this.US President Donald Trump has issued a pardon to a former Virginia sheriff who was convicted on fraud and bribery charges.
A jury found former Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins guilty of accepting more than $75,000 (£55,000) in bribes last December, in exchange for making several businessmen into law enforcement officers without them being trained.
Jenkins, a long-time supporter of Trump, was sentenced in March to 10 years in prison. He was set to report to jail on Tuesday, but due to Trump's pardon, he will not spend a single day behind bars.
