Well, if it's cheaper to book two tickets than one, then buy two. Then you won't have anybody sitting next to you. Sounds like a win-win.

You also can cancel one of those tickets within 24 hours (on most major carriers).

you'd probably have to cancel the ticket, if the other person in your party doesn't show up they can fill the seat. You'd still end up with a cheaper ticket.

I think they'd have to refund you if they did that. Better yet get an oppossum and bring it with you on a leash as an emotional support animal.

I seem to recall they do not. I can’t remember the airline but a guy was pissed they sat someone next to him even though he bought both seats so he wouldn’t have to sit next to anyone.
