Trump administration refreezes some environmental grant money to Mass. despite judge's order

The on-again-off-again funding freeze saga continues in Massachusetts.

One day after a federal judge reiterated his order that the Trump administration immediately restore frozen funds across the country, two state environmental agencies say they no longer have access to millions of dollars awarded to them by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency during the Biden administration.

According to state officials, the Department of Energy Resources cannot access its $156 million grant for the Solar For All program, an initiative to slash energy costs for low-income residents by installing solar panels on tens of thousands of homes. Similarly, the Department of Environmental Protection cannot access almost $1.2 million of grant money for two air monitoring programs.

Together, the frozen funds represents more than half of the $230 million the judge ordered the Trump administration to restore to Massachusetts Monday.

The back-and-forth nature of the freeze has caused confusion among state officials, local nonprofits and others expecting to receive contractually obligated federal grant money.

Until there are consequences for violating the judge's order (i.e., somebody is jailed for contempt), they will continue to ignore the order.

It was "Red" during the last in the last administration too, except it's Russia now, instead of China....

What you can do to fight the Trump agenda


“What can I do?”

That’s the question a lot of you are asking.

I’ve spent the last week exploring that question. And the overarching answer, based on my research, is that you should reach out and make connections with others, help them when you can, and protect them when it’s necessary.

Those are wonderful aspirations, but they are a big vague. So in addition to pointing you toward some great resources, I’ve put together an eclectic list of somewhat more concrete things you can do to resist the Trump agenda.

  Indivisible provides the authoritative guide on how to contact your elected officials:
  
  If you’ve got a Democratic member of Congress: “That means your job is to support, cheerlead, or berate your Democratic Representative and/or Senators to be active fighters for every battle we fight on the Trump agenda. That work should be loud and public — whether positive or negative.”
  
  If your Republican member of Congress is vulnerable in 2026, or in a Senate race: “Demand your swing representative and/or senators show up in public. Make them explain where they stand at this moment of great divide. And make clear to them, and the broader community they represent, that folks paying attention in their district/state disagree with the MAGA agenda and want to see them vote against it.”
  
  If your Republican representatives are safe in 2026: “Your job is to tell the story in your own community — recognizing you aren’t likely to shift their vote in the short term.”
  
  And if you’ve got Democrats in local, city, and state offices: “Over the next two years, your Democratic elected officials will make choices every single day about whether to stand up to MAGA or whether to go along with it. The government financial regulator that generates the need for my legal work has basically been shut down. Not ideal for someone with an annual billable hours requirement. Hopefully the vacuum created drives a need for lawyers to say “yea, you can/cant do that formerly illegal thing now.”
