'Devastated': GOP governor begs Trump to reconsider disaster aid

Arkansas Republican Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders — who was once President Donald Trump's White House press secretary — is now urging him to reverse his administration's denial of her disaster relief request.

Rolling Stone reported Wednesday that Sanders' initial request for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) following severe storms in her state was denied. She's since written a separate letter begging her former boss to intervene and reverse the denial.

“The severe storms and tornadoes that occurred on March 14 and 15, 2025, produced catastrophic impacts across the state. The sheer magnitude of this event resulted in overwhelming amounts of debris, widespread destruction to homes and businesses, the tragic loss of three lives and injuries to many others. Less than three weeks later, Arkansas was once again devastated by a second wave of severe storms, tornadoes, and a generational flooding event,” Sanders wrote.

“Without the support of a Major Disaster Declaration, Arkansas will face significant challenges in assuming full responsibility and achieving an effective recovery from this event," she continued. "I have determined that the severity and magnitude of these storms exceed the capabilities of the State and affected local governments to respond adequately. As such, supplemental Federal assistance is crucial.”

Obtaining federal disaster relief may be difficult for even ruby-red states like Arkansas during Trump's second term. He has previously floated getting rid of FEMA entirely, following the destructive wildfires in Southern California earlier this year. And a recent report found that his administration's cuts to FEMA have since put hurricane-prone red states like Florida and Texas in a perilous position as hurricane season begins in June.

Trump Warned by Walmart, Target, and Home Depot CEOs That Disastrous Tariff Policy Will Lead to ‘Empty Shelves’

President Donald Trump “got a scare” from CEOs of the nation’s largest big box retailers that their shelves could soon be empty as a result of his draconian tariff policy announced on April 2, according to a report from Axios. As a result, the White House appears to be pivoting to a much softer position on trade.

Markets rallied on Tuesday as investors learned that the Trump administration was pivoting to a softer position on the controversial tariff policy, which cratered 401ks and led to talk of an inevitable recession.

At the root of this news were comments made by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in a private speech to JP Morgan, during which he admitted an ongoing trade war with China was not sustainable.

“I do say China is going to be a slog in terms of the negotiations,” Bessent said, according to a transcript obtained by The Associated Press. “Neither side thinks the status quo is sustainable.”

But CEOs of Walmart, Target, and Home Depot privately warned Trump in an Oval Office meeting that supply changes will be disrupted, prices will increase, and shelves of their stores will be empty, according to sources reported by Axios.

'Hideous' Trump hangs new self-portrait in White House next to his greatest political rival

In yet another move to redecorate The White House, President Donald Trump has displayed another self-portrait, this time right next to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, still hung up from her time as first lady.

The portrait, which has been described as "hideous" is hung in a permanent location just outside the East Wing of the White House, where First Lady Melania Trump has her offices. Visitors taking the official White House tour pass by that location.

Unlike the previous portrait hung in the White House, this did not appear to have replaced any previous portrait hung from the previous occupants. Instead, the picture appeared to be squished in between Clinton and former First Lady Laura Bush.

Two men were carried away from the Albemarle County Courthouse in downtown Charlottesville Tuesday morning as part of an apparent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid.

Such scenes are becoming increasingly common as the Trump administration cracks down on immigrant communities. More than 100,000 immigrants have been deported since President Donald Trump took office on Jan. 20. While the administration has argued it has targeted only people in the country illegally, courts have determined that has not always been the case.

What alarmed Nicholas Reppucci, head of the Charlottesville Office of the Public Defender, is that the enforcers called in to detain the two men in the city Tuesday morning were wearing plain clothes and did not display badges or arrest warrants.

“It’s horrifying for the person being detained,” Reppucci told The Daily Progress. “It’s horrifying for the community members watching it.”

Judge Accuses Government of ‘Willful and Bad Faith’ Stonewalling in Deportation Case

A federal judge in Maryland blasted the Trump administration on Tuesday for flouting her instructions to answer questions about what steps it had taken, and planned to take, in seeking the release of a Maryland man who was wrongly deported to El Salvador last month.

The sharp rebuke by the judge, Paula Xinis, contained in an eight-page order, suggested she had lost her patience with the Justice Department’s pattern of stonewalling her in the case involving the deported man, Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia.

In her order, Judge Xinis accused the department of “a willful and bad faith refusal to comply with discovery obligations.” She also dismissed as “specious” its attempts to evade providing information about how Mr. Abrego Garcia ended up in a Salvadoran prison by claiming that it amounted to privileged state secrets.

“For weeks, defendants have sought refuge behind vague and unsubstantiated assertions of privilege, using them as a shield to obstruct discovery and evade compliance with this court’s orders,” Judge Xinis wrote, giving vent to her frustrations. “Defendants have known, at least since last week, that this court requires specific legal and factual showings to support any claim of privilege. Yet they have continued to rely on boilerplate assertions. That ends now.”

Remarkably, however, the Justice Department, in the court papers filed on Tuesday morning, seemed not to understand those instructions — or perhaps was simply ignoring them. Several times, department lawyers said that they were refusing to answer questions about the case because they were based on the “false premise that the United States can or has been ordered to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s release from custody in El Salvador” — which is, of course, precisely what they had been told to do.

In her order, Judge Xinis scoffed at what she called this “false premise objection,” chiding the Justice Department and the White House for having raised it in the first place.

“Defendants — and their counsel — well know that the falsehood lies not in any supposed ‘premise,’ but in their continued mischaracterization of the Supreme Court’s order,” she wrote.

Adminstration officials need to be dragged into court to answer questions under oath for contempt proceedings, and somebody should go to jail. They're being given too much lenience.

And, if you read the judges order she rips the DOJ laywers a new one, and they will likely face bar referrals for their unethical conduct. If the DOJ were operating normally, they would face repercussions from within DOJ for their misbehavior, but we know that won't happen with Pam Bondi at the helm.

I thought Trump already operated that way in his real estate business dealings, so this comes as no surprise, horrific as it may be.
