Um, It Turns Out No One at the Ports Is Collecting Trump’s Tariffs
Thanks to a technical glitch, Donald Trump’s tariffs haven’t even been collected at U.S. ports.
On Friday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported that an entry code in the U.S. system for American ships to use to have their freight exempted from tariffs isn’t working, and “the issue is being reviewed.” As a result, no tariffs are being collected by the U.S. government for the time being.
U.S. shippers told the news outlet that they have not been charged higher tariff rates on their containers as recently as Thursday, despite Trump’s claims that tariffs are in effect and are being collected. This latest snafu is on top of the fact that many companies and industry groups are still unsure of when tariffs will be collected, especially since Trump keeps changing the rates erratically in social media posts and executive orders, and making new threats almost daily.
“There has been some confusion on what President Trump has said in social media posts on when the tariff starts and what is written in the executive order,” Jarred Varanelli, vice president of U.S. sales at logistics firm Savino Del Bene, told CNBC. “Social media posts are not law on the pause and increase in tariffs. With the constant changes to the regulations, all customs brokers in our industry have a difficult task ahead of them.”
If there were doubts about the tariffs being a wise policy, those have increased several times over the fact that U.S. authorities can’t even implement them.

The Trump Administration Just Violated Another Court Order
A federal judge ruled Friday that the president violated a court order to stop freezing federal funds by withholding Federal Emergency Management Agency relief to at least 19 states. The judge said that the Trump administration seemed to be making a “covert” effort to punish states whose immigration practices differed from the White House.
U.S. District Judge John McConnell issued an injunction in March on behalf of 23 states that sued the federal government after the White House moved to pause aid to states, ruling that the move “fundamentally undermines the distinct constitutional roles of each branch of our government.”
On Friday, McConnell found that the Trump administration disregarded the court order, with at least 19 states, all of whom with Democratic attorneys general, presenting “undisputed evidence” that they were not receiving FEMA funds already appropriated by Congress.
Oregon, for example, still hasn’t received $120 million in funds meant for winter storms, flooding, landslides, wildfires, and flood mitigation. Hawaii said FEMA has yet to deliver $6 million to rebuild after wildfires devastated Maui in 2023.
For its part, the Trump administration claimed that it was creating a new review process for allocated funding. The states, however, said that they weren’t being given their funds since early February, which McConnell ruled was a clear violation of the order. The judge noted that this appeared to be in accordance with Trump’s executive order barring “sanctuary” states from receiving aid.

Ill give props to Trump for inviting Maher, but Bill's report of "the guy I had dinner with is not the same person we see every day" to me blows a hole in the narrative of Trump being this straight shooter. The public Trump is all an act?
Plus I disagree with Bill saying that he doubts he couldve had the same conversation with Clinton and Obama. How does he know?

Bill's been increasingly desperate to stay financially solvent and will do whatever he thinks will help.
He has no entertainment skilld beyond being a wry comic whose most creative and humorous times are well behind him.
He's basically retracing the path of Dennis Miller in the "cater to the right, cater to the left, shake and stir" sociopolitical comedy world.
They started out being mainly lefty cuz right wing comedy had been seen as the province of hee haw to "you may be a redneck" to "last man standing" types of "low intellect humor" and they strove to be regarded as "intellectual comics" which was almost solely appealing to a more liberal, educated audience.
But in these social media days the affinity the right wing has shown for a trolling type/level of "humor", and the growing group of maga and young incel dumbass conspiracy-prone "victimized" males (the Joe Rogan and Dana White fans) will follow an often critical comic like bill as long as he or she slams the libs at least sometimes.
They are now a viable source of income too...up to the point where "both sides" get sufficiently bored with you and you just keep shrinking in relevance until you're auditioning for reality shows and still not getting any parts.
