The Washington Commanders are adding another former coach — and a familiar name — to their staff. Former Pro Bowl wide receiver Wes Welker will join the team as a personnel analyst, working with both the personnel and coaching staffs, according to two people with knowledge of the hire. He will start around the time the Commanders’ offseason program begins April 22, one of those people said.
An undrafted wideout out of Texas Tech, Welker played 12 seasons in the NFL, earning four all-pro selections (two first-team) and five Pro Bowl honors while becoming one of the finest slot receivers in league history.
He signed with the then-San Diego Chargers as a college free agent in 2004, then spent three seasons with the Miami Dolphins. The height of his career was spent in New England, where he played six seasons after getting traded by Miami, leading the NFL in receptions three times (in 2007, 2009 and 2011).
Welker still holds numerous NFL records, including the most seasons with at least 105 catches (five) and the longest touchdown reception (99 yards, a record he shares with 12 others). He is also the Patriots’ all-time leader in catches, with 672.
Welker started coaching in 2017, two years after his final playing season. He spent two seasons as an offensive and special teams assistant for the Houston Texans before heading to San Francisco to be the 49ers’ receivers coach from 2019 to 2021. He held the same role in Miami for the past three seasons.
