I'm am so glad I'm retired. Being a road warrior & flying around the country every week has got to be brutal these days.China wrote: Thu Mar 13, 2025 2:27 amFlying is getting worse, if you can believe it
For decades now, we the people have been remarkably tolerant of all the nickel-and-diming the air travel industrial complex has unleashed on us. (That’s largely because of rampant industry consolidation that’s made US airlines less competitive and more cartel-like, but that’s a rant for another day.)
Point is, flying sucks. And it’s getting worse.
As if we didn’t have *waves hands at everything* to worry about, airlines are bracing for a slowdown in travel.
Delta, Southwest and American Airlines all cut their first-quarter financial forecasts this week. On top of that, Delta and United said they’re reducing their capacity for summer travel.
It’s not entirely clear why but it may have something to do with the two terrifying plane crashes in the first two months of the year; the lingering memory of Boeing’s door-plug blowout just over a year ago; bad weather leading to delays and cancellations; wildfires; mass layoffs leading people to rein in their expenses; businesses scaling back travel because they don’t know whether tariff policies are going to hamstring their operations …
I’m just spitballing.
Actually, it’s all of those things, as my colleague Chris Isidore reported Tuesday.
That’s bad news for anyone planning to fly this year. When airlines pull back, the experience of flying gets suckier.
“Reduced capacity” is industry-speak for fewer flights. That means the flights that do happen will likely be expensive and packed to the gills. And, when those summer storms inevitably hit, there’ll be fewer options for rebooking.
In response, airlines will be incentivized to extract maximum value from its customers. Which means — you guessed it — more and/or worse fees.
Southwest already got that party started on Tuesday, when it decided to ditch the one little luxury it allowed its customers: free checked bags.

This damn idiot forced everyone on the plane to divert to Denver after he wouldn't give up his lighter. He kept flicking it on and off during the flight. After being told that it had to be confiscated by the pilot, he said "I don't give a fuck"
Imagine being that selfish that everyone's day is ruined because the plane had to divert to Denver for you to be arrested and placed on the no fly list

Delta Plane Nearly Collides with Air Force Jet at Same D.C. Airport Where 67 Died in Midair Collision
A Delta Airlines flight carrying 136 passengers narrowly avoided a collision with an Air Force jet Friday afternoon, near the same Washington, D.C. airport where 67 people died in a midair crash just two months ago.
The close call happened at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Delta Flight 2983, an Airbus A319, was getting ready to take off for Minneapolis-St. Paul with 131 passengers and five crew members on board. At the same time, four Air Force T-38 Talon jets were heading for a scheduled flyover of Arlington National Cemetery.
As the Delta flight was cleared for takeoff around 3:15 pm, the pilots were warned by an onboard alert about another aircraft nearby. Air traffic controllers quickly stepped in and ordered both the Delta plane and the military jets to change their flight paths to avoid a crash.
The Delta plane had just left the gate at 2:55 pm and was scheduled to arrive in Minneapolis at 4:36 pm. Thanks to the intervention of air traffic controllers, the flight changed course, and no injuries were reported.
The Air Force T-38 Talon is a supersonic jet used for pilot training and other military tasks.
The FAA is investigating the near-miss to figure out what went wrong and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Planes clip wings at DCA with members of Congress on board
A plane hit another plane's wing while on the runway at Reagan National Airport Thursday afternoon, according to American Airlines.
What we know:
Two American Airlines planes clipped wings at Reagan Airport, according to the FAA. One flight was bound for JFK International Airport and the other was headed to Charleston International Airport.
"While waiting to take off on the runway at DCA just now, another plane struck our wing. Thankfully, everyone is safe," posted New Jersey Representative Josh Gottheimer Tuesday afternoon.
"Serving in Congress has come with some once in a lifetime experiences… like just now while stationary on the runway at DCA, another plane just bumped into our wing. Heading back to the gate, but thankfully everyone is ok," said New York Representative Nick LaLota.
According to LaLota, New York Representative Grace Meng was also on board the flight, "handing out grapes."

Minnesota nurse facing federal charges for allegedly grabbing flight attendant’s genitals
A 64-year-old licensed practical nurse is facing federal charges after she allegedly grabbed a flight attendant’s genitalia while traveling from Las Vegas to North Dakota.
Jody Lynn Sherry-Berg was arrested Tuesday on one count of interference with flight crew members, according to federal court documents reviewed by The Independent.
The altercation occurred January 16 aboard an Allegiant Air flight from Harry Reid International Airport to Grand Forks International Airport, states an indictment unsealed April 8 in Minnesota federal court.
Sherry-Berg, a Bemidji, Minnesota, resident, “did knowingly interfere with the performance of the duties” of a male flight attendant identified in court filings as “J.M.,” when she “assaulted J.M. by grabbing J.M.’s genitals,” the indictment contends.
A fellow traveler captured cell phone video of Sherry-Berg twice grabbing the flight attendant’s crotch, Fargo, North Dakota NBC affiliate KVLY reported at the time of the incident.
